Montana State's Kral Ferch Dunks On St. John's Shelton Jones

Damn, this guy got some serious hops. Woody Harrelson would be proud. Props to Todd once again.

His name was Kral Ferch, and no, that's not a typographical error.

The moment of his life occurred 13 years ago and three and a half feet above the floor at the Long Beach Arena, and nobody who was there that night will ever forget it - certainly not the guy over whom Ferch dunked so majestically, Shelton Jones.

Kral Ferch? His name owes to nothing more than a wild hair on the part of his father, who wanted something distinctive for his son. Kral was reared in Livingston, Mont., grew to 6-foot-4 and played forward at Montana State, which in 1986 found itself a No. 16 seed in the West against top seed St. John's, with college player of the year Walter Berry and point guard Mark Jackson.

St. John's also had 6-8 Shelton Jones, who was from Brooklyn. So it was hoops at its most fundamental when, in the heat of a spirited second-half run by the crowd's darling, Montana State, Ferch found himself in the middle of a fast break with only Jones to beat.

"He said in postgame interviews, he thought I was going to lay it in," Ferch said. "My size . . . white kid from Montana . . ."

What Jones couldn't know was Ferch had a 42-inch vertical jump. He won a state high-jump championship at 6 feet 10 inches and could touch 11-9.. Suddenly, as 10,000 jaws dropped, Ferch took the ball in a palm, soared massively over Jones and dunked. Brooklyn, meet Livingston, Mont.

Ferch is now in computer programming in San Diego, which is probably not as exciting as dunking over Shelton Jones.

"I don't know what to say about it," Ferch mused, "except it's one of my more vivid memories."

i attended MSU at the same time & watched Kral fly over opponents regularly. He was a legend in Montana high school ball. Also a great guy.
